Went to a show in London over the weekend called Stomp.
It was absolutely fantastic to say the least. No speech or acting, just incredible music....from rubbish. Thats right peops, these chaps made music from crushing packets, running a pencil over the ribs of a can...amazing.
The show started with a chap, dressed like a builder of some sort, sweeping the floor on the stage. Think about the sweeping sound the broom makes and then the hard knock as he knocks the broom on its side, how you normally do when you sweep. It at first doesnt seem like much as he is after all only sweeping. Slowely but surely he starts a bit of a rythm going. sweep, sweep, sweep, knock! sweep, sweep, sweep, knock!
This chap is then joined by another dude who starts walking onto the stage, again sweeping, only this time he is in brilliant tune with the first. They move on to sweeping and knocking and stamping their boots on the ground. Me starts to think, this is pretty cool, until they are joined by another and another until there are about 10 on the stage all sweeping and knocking and stamping. This all picks up in a big way where they dance around each other, some smashing the brooms down whiles others furiously sweeping combined with the stomping and stamping. man o man they must of had mic's under the stage as it was loud.
The scenes following that are just as brilliant with smashing dustbins lids and making sucking sounds with toilet plungers and then there is this incredible scene. The had these tubes of different length. obviously the shorter the tube the higher the pitch. The sound they made was a type of hollow " tounk " (i dont know how to spell sounds, forgive me) sound. So you have again these 10 chaps, dressed in builders gear walking around this time, knocking the stage with these tubes making such lovely music. All perfectly correographed.
It really was a beautiful play, laced with innocent humour. Certainly is difficult to describe and certainly something to go to, if it gets to your side. Ive attached the link if you peops want to see their site... http://www.stomp.co.uk/
Off to see the Blue Man group next. Heard its something similar but where Stomp uses found materials, Blue Man Group use colours and digital music, also pretty good apparently. Watch this space...
Anyways, hope you are all well and looking after yourselves.
Hopefully will be home for a short 8 week holiday begining of july. Look forward to hooking up with my fellow homies.
